-Matt Rives as Tom Wingfield
-Katie Kemp as Laura Wingfield
-Eric Craig as Jim O'Connor

It’s Sacramento in 1952 and you’re the first black family on your block. Come laugh and cry with the Rutlands in, When We Were Colored, a play by Ginger Rutland, adapted from her mother Eva’s legendary memoir.

The play, like the book from which it springs, tells the story of a middle class black woman born and raised in the segregated south before World War II who moves West to raise her children in “integrated” California after the war.

In this poignant homage to her mother, former television reporter, NPR commentator and editorial writer for The Sacramento Bee, Ginger Rutland puts her family’s story on stage. See the play and you will experience the joys and the anguish of integration for an ordinary black family, living in extraordinary times.

California Stage will honor one young woman’s selflessness and determination during the darkest days of WWII by producing Joanna H. Kraus’ Angel in the Night. Directed by local favorite Michael RJ Campbell, this stirring story of quiet heroism opens in the newly upgraded California Stage Theater space.

The story is about Pawlina, a kind Polish Catholic teenager living on her mother’s farm in occupied Poland. When Golda Schacter and her two children come to her for help after escaping from the ghetto, Pawlina hides them plus 14-year-old Mania Birnberg for two long years in a bunker under the barn. But the fear, deprivation, and close quarters prove too much for Mania, whose insistence on hiding in plain sight jeopardizes the very lives of everyone involved in this captivating, inspiring drama.

Tara Cartozian, a CSUS Theatre student, makes her Sacramento theatre debut as the demurely determined Pawlina alongside Sacramento luminary Janet Motenko, who earned rave reviews for her performance in Cal Stage’s spring production of Italian Opera. They share the stage with Daniel Dorofeyev, who returns to Cal Stage after last year’s critically acclaimed Journey’s End to play the menacing Nazi officer Ernst. Elly-nominated Niels Larsen provides scenic and lighting desgn and California Stage Artistic Director Ray Tatar produces.

What will endure when the cataclysm arrives, when the grid fails, society crumbles, and society is faced with the task of rebuilding? Anne Washburn’s imaginative dark comedy propels us forward to a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of strangers bond by recreating the infamous “Cape Feare” episode of The Simpsons. From this fortuitous meeting, distant memories of “Marge” and “Homer” become the basis for shaping a new society as the play travels decades into the future. Mr. Burns is both a marvelous meta-tribute to the iconic first-family of contemporary pop-culture, and a celebration of the power of generational storytelling.

The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’ classic and poignant story of a family trapped in a world of illusions and stifled dreams.

This drama explores the struggle of a young man’s desire to escape life’s drudgery and realize his life’s dreams; a mother’s domineering drive to recreate an Old Southern courtship for her crippled daughter; a gentleman caller whose dreams have long been dashed and covered over with false egoism; and a young lady who tempts imprisonment in her self-made cage filled with glass figurines. This is a rare opportunity to see a new creation of a classical treasure on the play’s 70th anniversary on Broadway.

Cast and crew:
-Lee Marie Kelly as Amanda Wingfield
-Matt Rives as Tom Wingfield
-Katie Kemp as Laura Wingfield
-Eric Craig as Jim O'Connor

This production is directed by Margaret Morneau.
