Hunger is a very real issue in the community that currently affects over 245, 000 households, which includes 88,000 children. To lessen the challenge of hunger and help ensure that more people in the community can eat well, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op is partnering with non-profit organizations to provide free hands-on cooking and nutrition education through? our Co-op Community Kitchen program. Current partners include: River City Food Bank, Wellspring Women’s Center, Mercy Housing, Domus Development, and Oak Park Sol Community Garden.

The Co-op Community Kitchen program offers a free four-week course in both English and Spanish that meets for two hours, each week. These classes are team-taught by a volunteer cooking educator and nutrition educator. Many of the volunteers for the program are upper division or graduate Nutrition Degree students from Sacramento State University. This partnership provides these students an
opportunity to learn teaching skills first hand that they can apply to grad school or future jobs.

Lessons cover what foods make up a healthy meal; reasons to reduce consumption of sugar; unhealthy fats and sodium; food budgeting, and proper ways to store food to reduce waste. Participants practice fundamental cooking skills including proper knife techniques, reading ingredient labels, and making a healthy meal for a family of four on a $10 budget. Each week students take home key ingredients used to make the meal so they can replicate it at home.

Arrive early to stroll the information kiosks, see art and enjoy refreshments.

Topics:
-Why are so many hungry in a region known for its agricultural abundance?
